About the Wallace Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Wallace as a Clan/Family tartan. The Wallace sett is one of the boldest of all — a striking red ground crossed with black and lifted by a fine yellow line — alongside a cool green and blue hunting Wallace, both worn in ancient and modern shades.

Clan Wallace is a Lowland Scottish clan of Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, whose name comes from the Latin Walensis, marking the family as Britons of the old Kingdom of Strathclyde. The clan motto Pro Libertate, "for liberty," and the war cry Freedom make Wallace tartan among the most meaningful of all for Scottish pride and ancestry gifts.

Wallace Tartan Pattern and Colours

The red Wallace tartan is among the most instantly recognised of all setts, a bold red crossed with black and a fine yellow line; there is also a cool green and blue hunting Wallace. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more vivid.

Wallace Heritage

The Wallaces came into Scotland as vassals of the High Stewards, and Richard Walensis held Riccarton near Kilmarnock before 1160. His descendants gathered broad lands in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, and a younger son, Malcolm, received Elderslie and Auchinbothie. Malcolm of Elderslie was one of the few Scots nobles who refused to submit to Edward I in 1296, and he and his eldest son lost their lives for it.

Malcolm's younger son was Sir William Wallace, who rose against the English occupation, won the great victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297, was chosen Guardian of Scotland, and after his defeat at Falkirk was betrayed and put to death in London in 1305 — a sacrifice that helped set Scotland on the road to Bannockburn. The chief of the name is Wallace of that Ilk; the crest is an arm holding a sword, the plant badge the oak, the motto Pro Libertate.
