About the Urquhart Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Urquhart as a Clan/Family tartan. The Urquhart sett is a handsome design of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white; the earliest recorded Urquhart tartan is preserved in the Cockburn Collection of about 1815.

Clan Urquhart is a Highland clan of Ross and Cromarty, whose chief is Urquhart of Urquhart. The name is Gaelic, understood as a fort on a knoll or a place by a rowan wood, and the clan crest is a woman holding a sword and a palm sapling, with the motto Meane Weil, Speak Weil and Doe Weil.

Urquhart Tartan Pattern and Colours

Urquhart tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — cool, dignified colours of the Cromarty Firth and the Black Isle. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper.

Urquhart Heritage

Clan tradition names Conachar Mor as the founder, a warrior of the Great Glen said to have slain a wild boar that terrorised the country, with his old hound giving its life to save him — the boar of the clan arms recalls the tale. The name itself is first found in record in the thirteenth century, when a charter of Robert the Bruce allowed William de Urquhart of Cromarty to build his castle there.

The Urquharts were hereditary Sheriffs of Cromarty for some three hundred years, and tradition holds that seven sons of Thomas Urquhart fell together at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. The most celebrated of the name was Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty, scholar, royalist and the first translator of Rabelais into English. Branches held Craigston, Meldrum, Kinbeachie and Braelangwell, and the clan seat is Castle Craig on the Cromarty Firth.
