About the County Tyrone Tartan
The Tyrone tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, so anyone with a Tyrone connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs rather than ancient patterns, and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; they have been taken up warmly by families at home and among the very large Tyrone diaspora in America.
Tyrone Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on warm reds and greens with darker lines — the red of the famous hand borne by the O'Neills and the province, the green of the Clogher and Strule valleys, and the grey-blue of the Sperrin hills.
County Tyrone Heritage
Tyrone takes its name from Tir Eógain, the land of Eógan, and was the heartland of the O'Neills, the greatest of the northern Gaelic houses. At Tullyhogue their chiefs were inaugurated on a stone chair, in a ceremony performed by the O'Hagans, and from Dungannon they ruled much of Ulster until the Flight of the Earls in 1607.
The Sperrin Mountains fill the north of the county, and at Beaghmore a remarkable complex of stone circles and alignments was uncovered from beneath the bog. In the modern age Tyrone is closely linked with emigration: the Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh tells the story of those who left these townlands for the New World, and Tyrone families are found across America and Canada in great numbers.
