About the County Tipperary Tartan
The Tipperary tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s — a district tartan belonging to the county rather than to any family, and open to all who claim a connection with it.
The county tartans are modern designs and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; they have been widely adopted by Irish families as a way of naming the exact place their people came from.
Tipperary Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on rich greens with darker lines and warmer accents — the deep green of the Golden Vale, among the best pasture in Ireland, set against the blue-grey of the Galtees and Comeraghs on the county's southern edge.
County Tipperary Heritage
Tipperary is a large inland county of exceptional land: the Golden Vale spreads across its middle, and around it rise the Galtee Mountains, the Knockmealdowns, the Comeraghs and the Silvermines. Above the plain at Cashel stands one of the great sights of Ireland, a rock crowned with cathedral, round tower and chapel, the seat of the kings of Munster until it was given to the church in 1101.
The county was O'Brien and Butler country, with the Butlers of Ormonde holding great power from Cahir and beyond, and the O'Sullivans first seated at Knockgraffon before moving west. Holycross Abbey draws pilgrims still, and in the modern age Tipperary is known for its hurling and for the marching song that carried its name around the world in the First World War.
