About the Thompson Clan Tartan

The Thompson name — in Scotland usually Thomson — means "son of Thom", and is among the most numerous names in the country. Thomson tartans are recorded in the Scottish Register of Tartans, and the name is also carried within the tartans of Clan MacTavish, of which Thomson and Thompson are reckoned variant forms.

Many bearing the name in Perthshire and Argyll are in truth MacTavishes, from the Gaelic Mac Thàmhais; another branch was anglicised as MacThomas, a clan of the Chattan confederation seated in Glenshee and Glenisla. The name is also closely linked with the old family ownership of Duddingston by Edinburgh.

Thompson Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on a handsome ground of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red — cool, dignified colours shared with the tartans of the MacTavish and MacThomas kin.

Thompson Heritage

Because Thomas was among the commonest of Christian names, the patronymic arose independently across Scotland, in Gaelic and in Scots alike. In Argyll the MacTavishes of Dunardry bore the Gaelic form, and after the eighteenth century many of that clan took the name Thomson or Thompson; in Perthshire the MacThomases of Glenshee, descended from a chief of the Mackintoshes, did the same.

Thomsons appear in the roll of clans of 1594 and throughout the records of burgh and countryside, and the name is now among the most numerous in Scotland. Those who bear it may wear a Thomson or Thompson tartan, or the tartan of the MacTavish or MacThomas kin from whom their own line may spring.
