About the Thomas of Wales Tartan

The Thomas of Wales tartan is one of the modern Welsh family setts created in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, in collaboration with the Wales Tartan Centres.

Welsh tartan is a modern tradition and these designs are not drawn from medieval clan records; the words "of Wales" identify the design series. What they give is a cloth that names a Welsh family, worn at gatherings from Swansea to Patagonia.

Thomas Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Welsh family setts follow their own conventions of thread and weave. This collection draws on bold reds and greens with a gold accent — the red of the dragon, the green of the western hills and the gold of the Gower shore.

The Thomas Name

Thomas came into Wales through the church, from the apostle's name, and gave the Welsh form Tomos. Under the patronymic system a man was ap Thomas, and that phrase gave the surname Prothomas in a few districts, though most families simply took Thomas when fixed surnames arrived from the Tudor age. It became one of the three or four commonest names in the country.

It is strongest in the south and west — Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan — and Wales has given the name to two of her most celebrated poets: Dylan Thomas, born in Swansea in 1914, whose broadcasts and verse carried Welsh voices around the world, and R. S. Thomas, the priest-poet of the hill parishes of the north.
