About the Tennant Family Tartan

The Tennant name — also Tennent — comes from the medieval word for a tenant, one who held land of a lord; in a country of small farms and long leases it became a settled family name, found above all in Ayrshire and the west of Scotland.

As a family name rather than a Highland clan, Tennant is most fittingly matched with a family or district tartan. This collection brings a fitting Scottish tartan into wearable apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts.

Tennant Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on a cool ground of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — dignified colours of the Ayrshire farmland, its dairy country and low green hills.

Tennant Heritage

The Tennants were farming folk of Ayrshire, and among them was John Tennant of Glenconner, a farmer of shrewd judgement whose friendship with the family of Robert Burns is remembered in the poet's verse; Burns thought highly enough of him to seek his advice on land and on life.

In the following generation Charles Tennant left the land for chemistry, founding at St Rollox in Glasgow one of the greatest chemical works of the age, whose bleaching powder transformed the textile industry — and with it the cloth trade of Scotland. His descendants were raised to the peerage as Barons Glenconner, and the name spread from Ayrshire across Britain and the world.
