About the Swinton Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Swinton as a Clan/Family tartan. The Swinton sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines, a cool and dignified pattern of the Border country, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Swinton takes its name from the lands of Swinton in the Merse of Berwickshire, held by the family for something close to a thousand years — among the very oldest recorded landholdings in Scotland. The crest is a boar chained to a tree and the motto J'espere, "I hope."

Swinton Tartan Pattern and Colours

Swinton tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of the Merse, the rich farming plain of Berwickshire. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper.

Swinton Heritage

The name comes from the lands of Swinton — the "swine town", where wild boar were once hunted in the forest of the Merse — and the family have held them since the eleventh century, tracing descent from the old Northumbrian house of Gospatric, as do the Homes and the Nesbitts. The boar of the arms recalls the clearing of the ground of its wild swine.

Sir John Swinton was a soldier of great renown who fought in France and fell at the Battle of Homildon Hill in 1402; another Swinton fell at Flodden in 1513. The family were staunch Covenanters in the seventeenth century, and later gave Scotland judges and soldiers. Through every turn of Border history the Swintons kept their ground in the Merse, and the chief is Swinton of that Ilk.
