About the Stewart Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records Stewart in many setts, of which the Royal Stewart is by far the best known tartan in the world — a bold red ground crossed with lines of blue, green, yellow, white and black. Alongside it are the Dress Stewart on a white ground, the Hunting Stewart in greens, and the Old and Black Stewart setts.
Clan Stewart takes its name from the office of High Steward of Scotland, held by the family from the twelfth century, and from it sprang the royal house that ruled Scotland from 1371. The plant badge is the thistle and the motto Virescit Vulnere Virtus, "courage grows strong at a wound."

Stewart Heritage
The family descend from Walter FitzAlan, who came to Scotland in the twelfth century and was made High Steward by David I; the office became hereditary, and gave the family their surname. Walter, the sixth High Steward, married Marjorie, daughter of Robert the Bruce, and their son became Robert II in 1371 — the first Stewart king.
For more than three hundred years the Stewarts ruled Scotland, and after 1603 the three kingdoms, until the last of the direct line lost the throne. Branches of the family settled across the country — Appin, Atholl, Balquhidder, Bute, Galloway and many more — so that the name became one of the most numerous in Scotland. The clan is recognised by the Lord Lyon; it has no chief at present, and the Earls of Galloway are reckoned the principal branch, whose crest and motto the clan badge carries.
