Stewart of Galloway
The Stewart of Galloway Tartan is a captivating design from the 'Old and Rare' collection by the House of Edgar, made entirely from 100% pure new wool kilting fabric. This tartan carries profound historical importance, stemming from the renowned Clan Stewart, whose motto translates to "Courage grows strong at a wound." In contrast to many clans that a single chief governs, each segment of the Stewart clan operated under its leader, contributing to the clan's rich and varied heritage. The Stewarts played a significant role in Scottish history, having produced nine kings, including the esteemed Bonnie Prince Charlie, known for his leadership during the Jacobite uprising of 1745-1746. This rebellion ultimately ended in defeat at Culloden Moor, compelling Prince Charlie to flee to France after a lengthy period of evasion. The ancestry of the Stewart family can be traced back to the Counts of Dol and Dinan in France, with Walter Fitzalan receiving land grants from King David I, thus becoming Scotland's hereditary High Steward. The Stewarts served as Scotland's royal family from 1371 with Robert II until Queen Anne died in 1714. Designed by Councillor John Hannay of Dumfries around 1949-50, the Stewart of Galloway tartan encapsulates the clan's intriguing history and its various branches, including patterns associated with Prince Charlie, rendered in natural, earthy tones.
The Stewart of Galloway Tartan features a vibrant design primarily dominated by red, complemented by thick black lines that create an eye-catching grid. Within this structure, white, yellow, and green lines weave through, imparting depth and complexity to the pattern. The combination of colors—red, black, green, yellow, and white—creates a lively and dynamic appearance that embodies both tradition and sophistication, ideal for special ceremonies or everyday wear. Each meter of this fabric, which weighs between 13-14oz and has a width of 80cm, exemplifies the enduring grace and legacy of the Stewart clan.
