About the Somerville Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Somerville as a Clan/Family tartan. The Somerville sett is a bold and handsome design of red crossed with green, blue and black, a warm pattern, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Somerville takes its name from a town in Normandy near Caen, and is today an armigerous clan. The crest is a green dragon breathing fire and standing on a wheel, and the motto Fear God in Life, making Somerville tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Somerville Heritage

William de Somerville came north with David I and was made Lord of Carnwath, receiving lands in Clydesdale; he died in 1142 and lies at Melrose Abbey. A later William de Somerville is remembered in the famous legend of the worm of Linton: he is said to have destroyed a monstrous serpent that terrorised the district, and to have received the lands of Linton in Roxburghshire from Malcolm IV about 1174, afterwards serving as the king's chief falconer and sheriff of Roxburgh.

Sir William de Somerville, fifth of the name, fought for Alexander II at the Battle of Largs in 1263, when the Norse invasion was turned back. His son Sir Thomas was among the nobles compelled to sign the Ragman Roll in 1296, but joined William Wallace the following year. The family were raised to the peerage as Lords Somerville, holding the baronies of Carnwath, Cambusnethan, Linton and Plean, and founded the collegiate church at Carnwath.
