About the Skene Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Skene as a Clan/Family tartan. The Skene sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white, a cool and dignified pattern of the north-east, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Skene is a Scottish clan of Aberdeenshire whose chief is Skene of Skene. The name comes from the Gaelic sgian, a knife or dagger, and the clan motto Virtutis Regia Merces, "a palace the reward of bravery," makes Skene tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Skene Tartan Pattern and Colours

Skene tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — cool, dignified colours of the Aberdeenshire country. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Skene Heritage

Clan tradition tells that a younger son of Robertson saved his king from a wolf by killing the beast with his sgian, his dagger, and was rewarded with the lands round the Loch of Skene in Aberdeenshire — a story recalled by the three wolves' heads borne on daggers in the family arms. The Skenes of Skene held those lands for many centuries.

The clan fought at Harlaw in 1411, where the laird fell, and at Flodden in 1513. In the seventeenth century Skenes served in the wars on the Continent, and the family gave Scotland notable lawyers and scholars, among them William Forbes Skene, the great historian of Celtic Scotland. The chiefship continues as Skene of Skene, and the crest shows an arm from a cloud holding a triumphal crown.
