Calder House, largely of the sixteenth century, is reckoned among the great Renaissance houses of Scotland, and the family founded the neighbouring Kirk of Calder in 1541.
Sir James Sandilands entered the Order of Saint John — the Knights Hospitaller — and became Preceptor of Torphichen, the Order's Scottish headquarters. At the Reformation he resigned the Order's lands to the crown and received them back as a temporal lordship, being created Lord Torphichen by Mary, Queen of Scots. The title and the chiefship continue in the family, now in its fifteenth Lord.
