The other tells of an English force that abandoned high ground to attack across the river, and came to grief in the water.
The Rutherfords became one of the riding families of the Middle March, with towers at Hunthill, Edgerston and Rutherford itself, and they served in the long defence of the Border country. Samuel Rutherford, the theologian and writer of the seventeenth century, carried the name into Scottish letters, and from the Borders the name spread to Ulster, America and beyond.
