About the Russell Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Russell as a Clan/Family tartan. The Russell sett is a handsome design of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines, a cool and dignified pattern, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Russell is a Scottish clan of Norman descent, today an armigerous clan, whose principal Scottish house was Russell of Aden in Aberdeenshire. The name may come from the old French for "red" or from the Norman place de Rosel, and the motto Virtus Sine Macula makes Russell tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Russell Tartan Pattern and Colours

Russell tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of the north-east country. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Russell Heritage

The name is on record in Scotland from the 12th century: Walter Russell witnessed a charter to Paisley Abbey between 1164 and 1177, and Robert Russel set his seal to the Ragman Roll at Berwick in 1296, while Andreas Russell was a bailie of Aberdeen in 1310. Tradition holds that the north-eastern family sprang from one Rozel, who came north in the campaigns of 1333 and afterwards settled in Scotland, gaining the estate of Aden.

The Russells of Aden held their Aberdeenshire estate for centuries, building first a castle and later the fine Aden House, and remained there until the 20th century; the grounds are now a country park. Other lines held Montcoffer in Banffshire and Ashiesteel in Selkirkshire. Clan Russell has ancestral ties to the English Dukes of Bedford, and the name is found across Britain and America.
