About the Rosser of Wales Tartan
The Rosser of Wales tartan is one of the modern Welsh family setts designed in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, working with the Wales Tartan Centres.
These are recent designs rather than inherited patterns, and make no claim to medieval clan origins; the phrase "of Wales" identifies the series. They were made so that Welsh families could mark their own name in cloth.
Rosser Tartan Pattern and Colours
The Welsh setts follow their own conventions of thread and weave. This collection draws on warm golds and greens with darker lines — the gold of bracken on the valley sides and the green of the fields of Gwent and Glamorgan.
The Rosser Name
Rosser comes from Rhosier, the Welsh form of the Norman name Roger. Under the patronymic system a man was ap Rhosier, son of Rhosier, and that phrase gave two surnames still in use: Prosser, where the ap has run together with the name, and Rosser, where it has dropped away.
The name settled above all in the south-east — Glamorgan, Monmouthshire and the Gwent valleys — where Rosser families farmed the hillsides and later worked the ironworks and pits of the industrial valleys.
