About the Ross Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Ross as a Clan/Family tartan. The Ross sett is a bold and handsome design of red crossed with green and lifted by fine lines of blue and white, a warm pattern of the northern Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Ross, in Gaelic Clann Anndrais, is a Highland clan of Ross-shire whose chiefs were the ancient Earls of Ross. The plant badge is juniper, the crest a hand holding a garland of laurel, and the motto Spem Successus Alit, "success nourishes hope," makes Ross tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Ross Tartan Pattern and Colours

Ross tartan is recognised for its bold red ground crossed with green and lifted by fine lines of blue and white — warm, striking colours of the northern Highlands. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Ross Heritage

The first recorded chief of Clan Ross was Fearchar Mac an t-Sagairt, "son of the priest," whose family were the hereditary abbots of Applecross; for his service to Alexander II he was made Earl of Ross about 1234. His descendants ruled the great northern earldom, and the clan is known in Gaelic as Clann Anndrais, the children of Andrew, for Saint Andrew whose banner they followed.

The earldom passed from the direct male line in the 14th century and was afterwards contested by the Lords of the Isles, but the chiefship of the clan continued through the Rosses of Balnagown in Easter Ross. Balnagown Castle remains the historic seat, and a great many names are counted with the clan, among them Anderson, Gillanders, MacTaggart, MacTear, Vass and Tulloch.
