Pringle Heritage
The name Hoppringill, later shortened to Pringle, is one of the oldest in the Scottish Borders, on record from the reign of Alexander III; Elias de Hoppringill set his seal to the Ragman Roll in 1296. The family took their name from a place on the Gala Water about ten miles north of Galashiels, and from there branched into many houses — Smailholm, Whytbank, Torwoodlee, Clifton, Stitchill, Torsonce and more.
As a Border riding family the Pringles followed the Douglases and answered to the Wardens of the East and Middle Marches; in 1597 Pringle of that Ilk and Pringle of Smailholm bound themselves to keep the peace among their kin. David Pringle of Smailholm and his four sons fell at Flodden in 1513. Their towers still stand at Smailholm, Torwoodlee and Buckholm. The line of that Ilk ended in 1737, and the principal family became the Pringles of Stitchill, whose baronetcy survives to this day.
