About the Primrose Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Primrose as a Clan/Family tartan. The Primrose sett is a warm design of gold and green crossed with dark lines, a handsome pattern worn in both ancient and modern shades — fitting for a family whose very name is a flower.

Clan Primrose is a Lowland Scottish clan whose chief is the Earl of Rosebery, with his seat at Dalmeny House on the Firth of Forth. The clan motto Fide et Fiducia, "by faith and trust," and the crest of a lion holding a primrose make this tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Primrose Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on warm gold and green crossed with dark lines — the pale gold of the primrose itself against the green of springtime banks and hedgerows. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Primrose Heritage

The name comes from the lands of Primrose in the parish of Dunfermline in Fife, and may hold within it the old Pictish or British words for "tree" and "moor." The earliest recorded ancestor of the chiefly line is Henry Primrose, born before 1490, who lived near Culross Abbey; his son Gilbert Primrose became surgeon to King James VI, and another Gilbert was a minister of the reformed church at Bordeaux and in London.

Sir Archibald Primrose rose to be a judge of the Supreme Court and Lord Justice General after the Restoration of 1660, and his son Archibald was created Viscount of Rosebery in 1700 and Earl of Rosebery in 1703, sitting as a commissioner for the Treaty of Union. The family have held Dalmeny House ever since, and the present chief is the Earl of Rosebery.
