About the Preston Family Tartan
The Preston name is a Scottish territorial name, taken from lands called Preston — from the old words for the "priest's town" — of which there are several in the Lothians and the Borders. The chief line were the Prestons of that Ilk, whose barony in Midlothian later became known as Gorton and Craigmillar.

Preston Heritage
The name is on record early: a charter of 1222 shows Lyulph holding land in Linlithgow, which he gave to the Abbey of Newbattle, and Nicol de Prestone, reckoned Preston of that Ilk, appears on the Ragman Roll of 1296. Sir John de Preston rode with David II into England in 1346 and was taken at the Battle of Durham, spending several years in the Tower of London before a heavy ransom won his freedom.
His grandson, Sir Simon de Preston, bought the castle of Craigmillar in 1374, three miles south-east of Edinburgh, and the family built it up through the following centuries; its ruins still dominate the country round, and it was a favoured retreat of Mary, Queen of Scots. Sir Simon Preston of Craigmillar was Provost of Edinburgh in the 1560s. The family later held the barony of Valleyfield, and a baronetcy of Nova Scotia followed in 1637; Craigmillar itself was sold in the 1660s.
