About the Pentland Family Tartan

The Pentland name is a Scottish territorial name, taken from the barony and old parish of Pentland in Midlothian, which lay between Straiton and Roslin under the hills that still carry the name. From these lands the family took their name in the old Scottish way, as the Pentlands of that Ilk.

As a family name rather than a Highland clan, Pentland is most fittingly matched with a family or Lothian district tartan. This collection brings a fitting Scottish tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Pentland Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on a cool ground of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — the blues and greens of the Pentland Hills themselves, smooth heathy moorland rising above the Lothian plain.

Pentland Heritage

The name is on record from early times: Adam of Pentland was a monk of the Abbey of Holyrood about 1298, and Ralph de Penteland was sent to Montrose on the king's business in 1304, while others of the name appear in documents about Edinburgh through the 14th and 15th centuries. The family lost their lands during the Wars of Independence, when Robert the Bruce granted Pentland and its moor to Sir Henry St Clair of Roslin for his service.

The Sinclairs held the barony until 1633, when it was sold to the Gibsones, and the line of the Pentlands of that Ilk passed through an heiress to the Campbells, their arms still quartered in the Lyon register. Of the old parish only the churchyard remains, where among the stones lie men who fell at Rullion Green in the Pentland Hills in 1666. The hills themselves keep the name known the world over, as do the Pentland Firth and Skerries in the far north.
