About the Norvel Family Tartan
The Norvel name — also Norvell, Norvill and Norwell — is a shortened form of de Normanville, a name of Norman origin brought to Scotland in the 12th century. As a family name rather than a Highland clan, Norvel is most fittingly matched with a Scottish district tartan, worn as a mark of heritage.
This collection brings a fitting Scottish tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts, honouring an old name of Lowland Scotland.
Norvel Tartan Pattern and Colours
This collection draws on a cool ground of teal and green crossed with black and lifted by a soft line — dignified, handsome colours fitting for an old family of the Scottish burghs and the Border country.
Norvel Heritage
The name appears in Scotland as early as 1190, when John de Normanville witnessed a grant of land in the Borders, and Hugh de Normanville is recorded in 1200. Over the centuries the long Norman form was worn down in Scots speech to Norvell, Norvill and Norwell, and the family took its place among the burgesses and landholders of the Lowlands.
John Norvaile and George Norvil appear in Perth about 1471; William Norwell represented Stirling in the Scottish Parliament between 1568 and 1586; John Norvell was a Burgess of Stirling in 1596, Gilbert Norvell a Burgess of Aberdeen in 1605, and another of the name a merchant and guild brother of Glasgow in 1619. The family arms bear three martlets on a silver band. From Scotland the name spread to America, where it became well established.
