About the Napier Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Napier as a Clan/Family tartan. The Napier sett is a handsome design of red and green crossed with blue and black, a warm and dignified pattern, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Napier is a Lowland clan, traditionally descended from the ancient Earls of Lennox, one of the old Celtic royal houses of Scotland. Long seated at Merchiston Tower in Edinburgh, the clan bears the motto Sans Tache, "without stain," making Napier tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Napier Tartan Pattern and Colours

Napier tartan is recognised for its red and green ground crossed with blue and black — warm, dignified colours of the central Lowlands. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Napier Heritage

The Napiers held lands at Kilmahew in Dunbartonshire from before 1290, by charter of Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, and traced their descent from the ancient earls. Alexander Napier, a wealthy Edinburgh merchant, became Lord Provost of the city and acquired Merchiston, and his descendants rose high in royal service. The name may come from the office of the "naperer," keeper of the royal table linen, or, by family tradition, from a hero told he had "nae peer" — no equal.

The most famous of the name was John Napier, Laird of Merchiston, the great mathematician who invented logarithms and popularised the decimal point, work that changed the course of science. His son Archibald, first Lord Napier, was brother-in-law to the great Marquis of Montrose. The chief of the clan is Lord Napier; the crest is a dexter arm holding a crescent, the motto Sans Tache.
