Explore the history of Clan Murray

How it all started

Territories

Clan Murray is one of the great noble families of Scotland, descending from Freskin, a Flemish knight granted lands in Moray during the 12th century. The Murrays became powerful landowners in Atholl, Tullibardine, and Sutherland. As prominent royal supporters, the clan played key roles in national politics, military campaigns, and the Jacobite Risings. Their ancestral seat is Blair Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic Highland estates.

Clan Chief

The current Chief of Clan Murray is Bruce Murray, 12th Duke of Atholl. Uniquely, the Duke maintains the Atholl Highlanders—the only legal private army in Europe. The crest features a mermaid holding a mirror and comb, and the motto “Furth fortune and fill the fetters” emphasizes bold action and justice.
