About the Munro Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Munro as a Clan/Family tartan. The Munro sett is a bold and handsome design of red crossed with green and lifted by fine lines of black, white and blue, a warm and striking pattern of the Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Munro, in Gaelic Clann an Rothaich, is a Highland clan of Easter Ross, long seated at Foulis Castle on the Cromarty Firth. Their lands were called Ferindonald, "Donald's land," after their traditional founder, and the clan motto Dread God makes Munro tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Munro Tartan Pattern and Colours

Munro tartan is recognised for its bold red ground crossed with green and lifted by fine lines of black, white and blue, a warm and striking pattern of the northern Highlands. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Munro Heritage

The Munros held the lands of Ferindonald on the north side of the Cromarty Firth, and by tradition their founder Donald was rewarded with these lands for helping to repel Norse invaders. Robert de Munro, who died in 1369, is the first chief proved by record; his descendants held Foulis Castle and served the Earls of Ross. The clan fought at Bannockburn in 1314 and at Halidon Hill, and long contended with their neighbours the Mackenzies and Mackintoshes.

Robert Munro, the fourteenth of Foulis, fell at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, and the clan supported Mary, Queen of Scots. In the 17th century, hundreds of Munros marched to Germany to fight for Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in the Thirty Years' War, winning fame across Europe. The clan gave the world many notable sons, including the family of the American President James Monroe. The chief is Munro of Foulis; the crest is an eagle, the motto Dread God.
