About the Muir Clan Tartan

The Muir and Moore tartan is recorded by the Scottish Register of Tartans as a Clan/Family tartan. It is a distinctive sett of blue and green crossed with black, lifted by an unusual motif of narrow red stripes, worn in both ancient and modern shades — a handsome and uncommon pattern.

Clan Muir — also Mure, More and Moore — is an old family of the Scottish Lowlands, the chief line being the Mures of Rowallan in Ayrshire. The name comes from the Scots word for a moor, or from the Gaelic mór, "great," and Muir tartan is especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Muir Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Muir tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black, with a distinctive motif of narrow red stripes appearing on the green — a cool and unusual sett. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Muir Heritage

The Mures of Rowallan, near Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, were the chief family of the name. Sir Gilchrist Mure won renown at the Battle of Largs in 1263, when the Scots turned back the Norsemen, and the family held Rowallan Castle for many generations. The name spread widely across Scotland, being especially common in the west and in Orkney, in its many forms of Muir, Mure, More and Moore.

The family rose to royal connection when Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan married Robert Stewart, who became King Robert II, so that the royal house of Stewart itself sprang in part from the Mures. Sir William Mure of Rowallan, a poet and Covenanter of the 17th century, was among the last of the direct line. Clan Muir is today an armigerous clan, its name carried across the world with pride.
