About the Morris of Wales Tartan
The Morris of Wales tartan is one of the modern Welsh family setts designed in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, working with the Wales Tartan Centres.
These are recent designs rather than ancient patterns, and carry no medieval clan history behind them; the phrase "of Wales" identifies the series. They were made so that Welsh families could mark their own name in cloth.
Morris Tartan Pattern and Colours
The Welsh setts use their own conventions of thread count and weave. This collection draws on warm golds and greens with darker lines — the gold of Anglesey barley and the green of the island fields under the mountains of the mainland.
The Morris Name
Morris came into Wales from the personal name Maurice, of Latin root, which in Welsh gave both Meurig and, through the Norman form, Morus and Morris. Under the patronymic system a man was ap Morus; when fixed surnames took hold from the Tudor period, the form settled as Morris.
The name is forever linked with the Morris brothers of Anglesey — Morrisiaid Môn — four remarkable sons of a small farm at Pentre-eiriannell. Lewis Morris and his brothers were scholars, poets, surveyors and letter writers whose correspondence and antiquarian work did much to revive interest in Welsh literature; they were among the founders of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion in London in 1751.
