About the Morgan of Wales Tartan

The Morgan of Wales tartan belongs to the series of modern Welsh family setts designed in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, in collaboration with the Wales Tartan Centres.

Welsh tartan is a modern tradition rather than an inherited one — historic Welsh dress meant the gown and tall hat, not the kilt — and these setts carry no medieval clan history. The words "of Wales" identify the design series, not any territorial claim.

Morgan Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Welsh family setts are built with their own conventions, often using odd numbers of threads and differing warp and weft. This collection draws on sea teals and greens with darker lines — fitting for a name whose first element is môr, the sea.

The Morgan Name

Morgan is one of the oldest Welsh names still in daily use, from the early form Morcant, whose first element is môr, the sea. It was borne by kings: Morgan ab Owain ruled the south-eastern kingdom in the tenth century, and his name attached itself to the land itself — Morgannwg, which became Glamorgan, is the country of Morgan.

The name remained one of the commonest in south Wales, and the Morgans of Tredegar near Newport were among the great landed families of Monmouthshire for centuries, their house and park still standing. With the industrial age and the emigrations the name travelled far, and Morgans are found throughout the Welsh diaspora.
