About the Montgomery Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Montgomery as a Clan/Family tartan. The Montgomery sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of white, a cool and dignified pattern of the Ayrshire country, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Montgomery is a family of Norman origin, from de Montgomerie, long seated in Ayrshire as the Earls of Eglinton. The clan motto Garde Bien, "watch well," kept in the old Norman-French of the family's ancestors, makes Montgomery tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Montgomery Tartan Pattern and Colours

Montgomery tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine white lines — cool, dignified colours of the Ayrshire country. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Montgomery Heritage

The Montgomeries came to Britain with the Norman nobility, and the name first appears in Scotland in 1165, when Robert de Montgomery held the lands of Eaglesham. The clan's great hour came at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, when Sir John Montgomery captured the famous English warrior Sir Henry Percy, "Hotspur"; with the ransom he built Polnoon Castle, and by his marriage to the heiress of Eglinton he brought the great Ayrshire baronies to the family.

Raised to be Earls of Eglinton, the Montgomeries were among the foremost families of the west, though a long and bloody feud with the Cunninghams cost the fourth Earl his life in 1586. It was the thirteenth Earl who staged the famous Eglinton Tournament of 1839, a great revival of medieval chivalry. The present chief is the Earl of Eglinton and Winton. The crest is a lady holding an anchor and a savage's head, the motto Garde Bien.
