About the County Monaghan Tartan
The Monaghan tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, and anyone with a Monaghan connection may wear it.
There is a certain fitness in a Monaghan cloth, for this is a county with its own textile fame: the fine needle lace of Carrickmacross has been made here since the 1820s and is known far beyond Ireland.
Monaghan Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on deep greens with darker lines and cooler accents — the green of small drumlin fields and hedges, the brown of turf, and the still water of the little lakes that lie in every hollow.
County Monaghan Heritage
Monaghan is a county of drumlins — hundreds of small round hills left by the ice, with lakes and marsh between them, and hedged fields climbing every slope. The name comes from Muineachán, the place of the little hills, and the landscape has shaped everything from its farming to its history.
This was part of Oriel, and the country of the MacMahons, who held it until the seventeenth century. Carrickmacross lace, begun as a relief work in the 1820s and continued through the Famine years, made the county's name in the wider world. Monaghan also gave Ireland the poet Patrick Kavanagh, whose verse drew its whole world from these small fields around Inniskeen.
