Moffat Heritage
The Moffats were a powerful family of Upper Annandale from ancient times, said to spring from a Norse and Norman line, and to have given their name to the town of Moffat. Loyal to Scotland in the Wars of Independence, they were granted four charters of land at Westerkirk by Robert the Bruce, Lord of Annandale, in 1300, and Adam Moffat of Knock and his kinsmen fought at Bannockburn in 1314.
As a Border clan, the Moffats knew the hard life of the reivers, and a bitter feud with the Johnstones ended in disaster: in 1557 the Moffat chief and many of his kinsmen were killed. The clan was left "heidless," without a chief, for over four hundred years, until in 1983 Francis Moffat of that Ilk was at last recognised by the Lord Lyon. The crest is a crest-coronet and cross-crosslet, the motto Spero Meliora.
