About the Meredith of Wales Tartan

The Meredith of Wales tartan is one of the modern Welsh family setts designed in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, in collaboration with the Wales Tartan Centres.

These are modern designs rather than inherited patterns, and they make no claim to medieval clan origins; the phrase "of Wales" identifies the series. They were created so that Welsh families could mark their own name in cloth.

Meredith Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Welsh setts follow their own conventions of thread and weave. This collection draws on deep greens with darker lines and a warm accent — the green of the Tywi valley and the hills of Deheubarth, with the red of the dragon running through.

The Meredith Name

Meredith comes from the old Welsh personal name Maredudd, understood as carrying a sense of greatness or splendour. It belonged to the ruling houses of the south-west: Maredudd ab Owain, who died in 999, held Deheubarth and for a time Gwynedd and Powys as well, and later Maredudds appear among the princes of that country through the medieval centuries.

As fixed surnames replaced the patronymic system from the Tudor age, ap Maredudd gave both Meredith and Bedward or Predith in some districts, while Maredudd itself survives as a Welsh forename. The surname is found across mid and south Wales and the Marches, and travelled with Welsh emigrants to America and the wider world.
