Though the kingdom fell in the 16th century and the family endured confiscation and the Penal Laws, the senior line survived, and the chief is still recognised today as The MacDermot, Prince of Coolavin — one of the few Gaelic princely titles acknowledged by the Chief Herald of Ireland. The McDermotts were patrons of the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan, and the name remains proud across Ireland and the world.
