About the McKellar Family Tartan

The McKellar name comes from the Gaelic Mac Ealair, "son of Ealair" — Ealair being the Gaelic form of the Latin Hilarius, the name of an early saint and bishop. An old family of Argyll, long settled around Loch Fyne and in Knapdale, the McKellars were close followers of the Earls of Argyll, and are reckoned a sept of Clan Campbell. Those of the name are most fittingly matched with the Campbell tartan.

This collection brings the Campbell tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts, honouring an old name of the western Highlands.

McKellar Tartan Pattern and Colours

Worn with the Campbell tartan, this collection draws on a dignified ground of dark green and blue crossed with black — the handsome, sober colours of Clan Campbell, fitting for an old Argyll family of the Campbell following.

McKellar Heritage

The McKellars appear in the records of Argyll from the 15th century, holding lands such as Ardare under the Earls of Argyll. Cristin M'Callar of Ardare received a charter from the Earl in 1470, and Duncan McKellar of Ardure served as the Earl's deputy in 1518, while Archibald MacKellar was Chamberlain of Knapdale in the 17th century — marks of the trust the Campbells placed in the family.

Living in the heart of Campbell country, around Loch Fyne, Loch Awe and Knapdale, the McKellars shared in the fortunes of the great house of Argyll. From their Argyll homeland the name spread across Scotland and, with the emigrations, to Canada, America and beyond, one McKellar winning fame as a sculptor in the United States.
