About the McClure Family Tartan

The McClure name — also MacClure and MacLure — comes from the Gaelic Mac Gille Uidhir, "son of the sallow or pale lad." In the Scottish clan system the McClures are reckoned a sept of Clan MacLeod, and family tradition tells of a MacLeod sept that left Skye for Ulster, where the name softened to MacLure, before many settled in Galloway. Those of the name are most fittingly matched with the MacLeod tartan.

By the 15th century McClure was a well-established name in Galloway and Ayrshire in the Scottish south-west. This collection brings the MacLeod tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts for the McClure family.

McClure Heritage

The McClures became one of the well-known names of Galloway and Ayrshire in the south-west of Scotland, recorded there from at least the 15th century. Like many Border and south-western families, they had a long history of independence and, in the 17th century, several McClures suffered in the persecution of the Covenanters for their faith.

A branch of the family crossed to Ulster in the great migrations, and from there many McClures went on to America, where the name flourished. One of the name, Sir Robert McClure, won fame as an Arctic explorer who traversed the Northwest Passage. Through all their travels the McClures kept the memory of their MacLeod and Galloway roots.
