The Maxtones take their name from the lands of Maxton in Roxburghshire, but their long home was in Perthshire: around 1410 Robert de Maxton received the lands of Cultoquhey, near Crieff, and the family prospered there for centuries as lairds at the edge of the Highlands. Robert Maxton fell at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, among the many Scots gentry lost that day.
The Maxtones of Cultoquhey allied themselves by marriage with other Perthshire families, including the Oliphants and the Grahams, and in time the name became Maxtone Graham, borne by writers and soldiers of note. From their Perthshire home the Maxtone name spread across Scotland and beyond, keeping its old link to Cultoquhey and Crieff.
