About the Maule Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Maule as a Clan/Family tartan. The Maule sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines, a cool and dignified pattern of the Angus country, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Maule is a family of Norman origin, long seated at Panmure in Angus, whose chiefs became the Earls of Panmure. With a history reaching back to the founding of Arbroath Abbey, Maule tartan is especially meaningful for family pride, Angus heritage and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Maule Tartan Pattern and Colours

Maule tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of the Angus lowlands. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Maule Heritage

The Maules came to Scotland with the Norman nobility, and soon after King William the Lion founded Arbroath Abbey in 1178 they were established at Panmure and Barry in Angus, through the marriage of Sir Peter Maule to Christian, heiress of Panmure. In 1303 Sir Thomas Maule held Brechin Castle against the army of Edward I of England for three weeks, until his death brought the siege to an end.

The Maules rose to become Earls of Panmure, and in 1643 Patrick Maule, first Earl, bought Brechin Castle, which remains a family seat. James, the fourth Earl, joined the Jacobite rising of 1715 and lost his titles and estates, dying in exile; but the family endured, and through the marriage of the Maules and the Ramsays came the Earls of Dalhousie, who carry the Maule name and heritage to this day.
