About the Mar Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Mar as a Clan/District tartan. The Mar sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines, a cool and dignified pattern of the north-east, worn in both ancient and modern shades — a tartan of one of the oldest names in the land.

Clan Mar takes its name from the ancient province and earldom of Mar in Aberdeenshire, one of the seven great provinces of old Scotland. The clan motto Pans Plus, "think more," makes Mar tartan especially meaningful for family pride, north-east heritage and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Mar Tartan Pattern and Colours

Mar tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of Aberdeenshire and the valley of the Dee. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Mar Heritage

Mar is one of the seven ancient provinces of Scotland, ruled in Pictish times by a mormaer, the forerunner of an earl. Donald, Mormaer of Mar, fought beside the High King of Ireland Brian Boru against the Vikings at Clontarf in 1014, and by 1114 the earl of Mar was named in the great charters of the realm. The earldom, seated at Kildrummy Castle, is reckoned the most ancient in Scotland.

The earls of Mar stood at the heart of the nation: they backed Robert the Bruce, whose first wife was Isabel of Mar, and whose sister married a son of the house. Through an heiress the earldom passed in time to the Douglases, then the Stewarts, and at last to the Erskines. Today the chief of Clan Mar is the Countess of Mar, holder of the ancient first creation of the earldom, while the Erskine line holds a later creation. The clan crest is a Saracen's head, the motto Pans Plus.
