About the MacThomas Clan Tartan

Clan MacThomas descends from Tomaidh Mòr, "Great Tommy," a grandson of a chief of the Mackintoshes, the leaders of Clan Chattan. In the 15th century, as Clan Chattan grew too large for Badenoch, Tomaidh Mòr led his people over the Grampian mountains to settle in Glenshee, where they became a distinct clan, at first called after him. Their lands lay along the Shee Water, with the chief's seat in time at Finegand.
The MacThomases followed the Marquis of Montrose in the civil wars, led by the mighty John MacThomas, "McComie Mor." Many of the clan later took the names Thomson, Thom, Thomas or McCombie, and one of these, William McCombie of Tillyfour, became famous as the father of the Aberdeen-Angus breed of cattle. After long dispersal the chiefship was revived, and the present chief is MacThomas of Finegand. The crest is a wildcat holding a serpent, the motto Deo Juvante Invidiam Superabo.
