About the MacNicol Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacNicol — also Nicolson — as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacNicol sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white, a cool and dignified pattern of the Highlands and isles, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacNicol, in Gaelic MacNeacail, is an ancient clan long associated with the Isle of Skye and, in earlier times, with Assynt and Lewis in the far north-west. The clan slogan Sgorr a' Bhreac recalls the ancestral lands of Scorrybreac, making MacNicol tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacNicol Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacNicol tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — cool, dignified colours of Skye and the northern seaboard. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper.

MacNicol Heritage

Tradition gives the MacNicols an ancient home in Assynt, between the mountains and the sea on the far north-west coast, and later a long association with Scorrybreac on the Isle of Skye, which they held for centuries as principal tenants. Twenty-eight chiefs are said to lie buried at Scorrybreac, in the burial ground known as MacNicol's Aisle.

After the fall of the Lordship of the Isles, the MacNicols followed the MacDonalds of Sleat, and fought for the royal and Jacobite cause. Several Nicolsons of Scorrybreac helped shelter Prince Charles in his flight through the isles after Culloden. The last chief to live at Scorrybreac emigrated to New Zealand, and the chiefship continues today. The crest is a hawk's head, the slogan Sgorr a' Bhreac.
