MacNaughton Heritage
The MacNaughtons are of ancient Pictish descent, and were established in Argyll by the 13th century, between Loch Awe and Loch Fyne. In 1267 King Alexander III granted Gilchrist MacNaughton the hereditary keeping of Fraoch Eilean Castle, an island fortress on Loch Awe guarding the Pass of Brander. Their later principal seat was Dundarave Castle, the "castle of the two oars," on the shores of Loch Fyne.
The MacNaughtons supported Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, and later followed the Stuart and Jacobite cause, fighting at Killiecrankie; for this they lost their lands to the Campbells. When the direct chiefly line failed in 1702, the chiefship was restored in 1818 to Edmund MacNaghten of the Antrim branch in Ireland, whose descendants hold it still at Dundarave. The MacKendricks are a sept of the clan. The motto is I Hope in God.
