About the MacLennan Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacLennan as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacLennan sett is a handsome design, anciently recorded as predominantly blue and green with red and yellow lines, and is shared with Clan Logan, to whom the MacLennans are kin. It is worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacLennan, or Siol Ghillinnein, from the Gaelic Mac Gille Fhinnein, "son of the follower of Saint Finnan," is a Highland clan long settled about Kintail in Ross. The clan motto Dum Spiro Spero means "while I breathe, I hope," making MacLennan tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacLennan Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacLennan tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by lines of red and yellow, a sett shared with Clan Logan. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

MacLennan Heritage

The MacLennans settled about Kintail in the north-west, and became a dependent kindred of the powerful Mackenzies of Kintail and Seaforth, whose banner they bore in battle as the "banner-men of Kintail." Their proudest and most tragic hour came at the Battle of Auldearn in 1645, where the clan, led by their chief Ruaridh, a red-bearded giant, was all but destroyed defending the Seaforth standard, an order to withdraw never reaching them.

The MacLennans share their tartan and an ancient kinship with Clan Logan. Weakened after Auldearn and long without a chief, many MacLennans emigrated, giving their name to a county in Texas and mountains in New Zealand; pipers of the name served from Culloden to Waterloo. In 1978 a chief was again recognised, and the clan flourishes worldwide. The crest is a demi-piper, the motto Dum Spiro Spero.
