About the MacLellan Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacLellan as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacLellan sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines, a cool and dignified pattern of the south-west, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacLellan is an old clan of Galloway, long seated at Kirkcudbright, whose chiefs were the MacLellans of Bombie and Lords Kirkcudbright. The clan motto Think On — a reminder to the king of a promise kept — makes MacLellan tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacLellan Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacLellan tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of the Galloway country. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

MacLellan Heritage

The MacLellans were a leading family of medieval Galloway, and by the 15th century no fewer than fourteen knights of the name held lands in the south-west. When Sir William MacLellan captured the leader of a band of robbers terrorising Galloway and carried his head to King James II on the point of his sword, the clan's forfeited lands were restored — and the motto Think On, with the crest of a Moor's head, recalls the deed.

Sir Thomas MacLellan of Bombie, a supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots, built MacLellan's Castle at Kirkcudbright, whose ivied ruins still stand. The family were raised to the peerage as Lords Kirkcudbright, but the title fell dormant when the last chief died in 1832, and the clan is today an armigerous clan. The MacLellan name remains proud of its long Galloway heritage.
