About the MacLean Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacLean as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacLean of Duart tartan is famous in two forms: a vibrant red dress tartan and a green, black and blue hunting tartan, the latter among the oldest recorded of all setts, noted in a land charter of 1587. Both are worn in ancient and modern shades.
Clan MacLean, from the Gaelic Mac Gille Eathain, "son of the servant of Saint John," descends from Gillean of the Battle-Axe and is one of the oldest of the Highland clans. MacLean Heritage
The MacLeans descend from Gillean of the Battle-Axe, a warrior of the old royal line of Dalriada. In 1367 Lachlan Lubanach MacLean, fifth chief, married Mary MacDonald, daughter of the Lord of the Isles, and her dowry brought the clan Duart Castle and much of Mull; his brother Hector founded the MacLaines of Lochbuie. From Duart the MacLeans grew powerful, spreading to Coll, Ardgour, Tiree and beyond.
The MacLeans were famed for honour and courage: Sir Hector Ruadh and five hundred clansmen fell at Inverkeithing in 1651, and the clan followed Montrose and the Jacobite cause to Culloden. Ruined by war debts, Duart passed to the Campbells, but in 1911 Sir Fitzroy MacLean bought back and restored the castle, which is again the seat of the chief, Sir Lachlan MacLean. The crest is an embattled tower, the motto Virtue Mine Honour.
