The MacLarens fought for Bruce at Bannockburn under the Earl of Strathearn, and later allied with the Stewarts of Appin. Those of the Lawrie, Lowry and Laurie names are reckoned kin to the clan.
The MacLarens suffered grievously in their long feud with the MacGregors, who settled in Balquhidder after being driven from their own lands; in 1558 a MacGregor raid destroyed many MacLaren households. The clan came out for the Jacobites, and Donald MacLaren of Invernenty made a famous escape after Culloden. In 1957 the chiefship was restored, and the chief bought back Creag an Tuirc. The crest is a crowned lion's head between laurel branches, the slogan Creag an Tuirc.
