Gillespie MacLachlan sat in the first parliament of Robert the Bruce in 1309, and set his seal to the letter of the Scottish magnates to the King of France.
From their seat at Castle Lachlan the chiefs held Strathlachlan for centuries, styled MacLachlan of that Ilk and, from 1680, Baron of Strathlachlan. Staunch Jacobites, the seventeenth chief, Lachlan, was killed at Culloden in 1746 leading his clan, and Castle Lachlan was left a ruin. The clan endured, and the chief holds the barony still. The motto is Fortis et Fidus.
