How it all started
Territories
Clan MacDougall descends from Somerled, the 12th-century Norse-Gaelic ruler, through his son Dougall, whose name means "dark stranger." As Lords of Lorne, the MacDougalls established their power base in Argyll, particularly around Oban, Lorn, and the coastal stronghold of Dunstaffnage Castle. By the 13th century, they were among the most influential clans in western Scotland, controlling key sea routes and maintaining ties with both Norwegian and Scottish crowns. Despite suffering territorial losses after backing the Comyns against Robert the Bruce, the MacDougalls retained historical significance and cultural identity throughout Argyll.
Clan Chief
The current Chief of Clan MacDougall is Morag MacDougall of MacDougall, the 31st Chief and first female to hold the title. She resides in Oban, continuing the family’s leadership and commitment to preserving MacDougall heritage. The clan society remains active today, fostering connections among members worldwide and celebrating their legacy through events and gatherings.
Dunstaffnage Castle
Location: Near Oban, Argyll, Scotland
Dunstaffnage Castle, one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, is closely associated with Clan MacDougall, one of the most powerful clans in the west during the 13th century. Built around 1220 by Duncan MacDougall, son of Somerled and Lord of Lorne, the castle served as a key strategic fortress guarding the entrance to Loch Etive.
Constructed atop a rocky promontory with sweeping views of the surrounding sea and land, Dunstaffnage played a vital role in the Wars of Scottish Independence. The MacDougalls lost control of the castle to Robert the Bruce in the early 1300s, following their support of the Comyns against the future king.
Despite changing hands over the centuries, Dunstaffnage retained strong symbolic significance for Clan MacDougall, whose ancestral lands lay throughout Argyll and Lorne. The castle’s curtain walls and round towers remain remarkably well-preserved today, a testament to medieval Scottish military architecture.
Today, the castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and welcomes visitors year-round. Inside, you can explore the remains of the great hall, chapel, and battlements. Adjacent woodland trails and the nearby Dunstaffnage Chapel add to the atmosphere of this historic site.
