MacDonald of Sleat Heritage
The MacDonalds of Sleat rose from the wreck of the Lordship of the Isles to become one of the greatest of the Clan Donald branches, holding Sleat and Trotternish on Skye and North Uist, with strongholds at Duntulm and, later, Armadale. Made baronets of Nova Scotia in 1625, and raised to the peerage as Lords Macdonald, they were leaders among the Gaels of the north-west seaboard.
During the '45 the chief of Sleat held back from the rising, and it was a kinswoman of the Clanranald and Sleat houses, the brave Flora MacDonald, who spirited Prince Charles Edward "over the sea to Skye." The seat of Armadale now houses the Clan Donald Centre, heart of the clan worldwide. In 1947 the chief of Sleat was recognised as High Chief of all Clan Donald. The crest is a hand holding a cross, the motto Per Mare Per Terras.
