About the MacDonald of Glencoe Tartan
The MacDonalds of Glencoe — the MacIains, "sons of John" — are a branch of the great Clan Donald, descended from Iain, a son of Angus Og of Islay of the line of the Lords of the Isles. Their home was the wild and beautiful Glencoe in Argyll, where they lived under their own chief, MacIain of Glencoe. As part of Clan Donald, they carry the proud motto Per Mare Per Terras and their own distinctive tartan.

MacDonald of Glencoe Heritage
The MacIains held Glencoe from the 14th century, a small but proud branch of Clan Donald, served by their hereditary bards and bodyguards, the Hendersons. Like the rest of Clan Donald they followed the Jacobite cause, fighting at Killiecrankie, Sheriffmuir, Prestonpans and Culloden. But the name of Glencoe is remembered above all for one dark night in the winter of 1692.
In February 1692, soldiers who had been quartered as guests upon the MacDonalds turned on their hosts, and some thirty-eight of the clan were killed, with many more perishing in the snow as they fled — among the dead the aged chief, MacIain himself. The Massacre of Glencoe, a betrayal of the sacred bond of hospitality, shocked Scotland and is mourned to this day. The clan endured, and the memorial cross in the glen keeps their memory. The motto is Per Mare Per Terras.
