About the Clanranald Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacDonald of Clanranald as a Clan/Family tartan. The Clanranald sett is a handsome design of red and green crossed with blue and lifted by fine lines of white, distinct from the other Clan Donald tartans, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Macdonald of Clanranald, in Gaelic Clann Raghnaill, is one of the great branch clans of Clan Donald, with its own chief, styled the Captain of Clanranald, Mac Mhic Ailein. The clan motto My Hope Is Constant In Thee makes Clanranald tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Clanranald Tartan Pattern and Colours

Clanranald tartan is recognised for its red and green ground crossed with blue and lifted by fine white lines — a bold and handsome pattern of the western seaboard. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Clanranald Heritage

The founder of Clanranald was Ranald, eldest son of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, by Amy MacRuari, heiress of a great inheritance in the Outer Hebrides and Garmoran. Ranald did not succeed to the Lordship, which passed to his half-brother, but his sons founded two great houses: from Allan came the Clanranald, and from Donald the MacDonells of Glengarry. Their lands lay in Moidart, Arisaig, Morar and Knoydart, and in South Uist, Benbecula and the Small Isles, with the sea-girt Castle Tioram in Loch Moidart as their stronghold.

Loyal to the Stuart cause, the Clanranald fought with Montrose at Inverlochy in 1645, and their chief fell leading the clan at Sheriffmuir in 1715. In 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stuart came ashore in Clanranald country, and the young Clanranald was among the first to rise for him; the clan fought at Culloden. The chiefship, which passed to the Boisdale line in the 20th century, is held today by the Captain of Clanranald, a member of the High Council of Clan Donald. The crest is a castle with an armoured hand and sword.
